A transceiver is a mechanism that has the capabilities of both a transmitter and a receiver, hence the name, transceiver. The components of the circuits within the transceiver are shared. These devices are known for transmitting high quality data and having video and/or audio capabilities.

There are a variety of transceivers to choose from, each one specializing in different needs that the user may have. The range of transceivers consists of AUI Transceivers, M Series Fiber Optic Transceivers, Mini GBIC SFP Fiber Transceivers, and Fiber Optic Transceivers. Depending on the transceiver that a user may have they may be able to connect to different hubs or ports or be bi-directional.
